The Betrothal of the Virgin |
||||||||
The Virgin and Joseph are married in the temple depicted in the previous two frescoes. The action is strung across the painting. The disappointed suitors are on the left, where one of them breaks his rod across his knees. Near the middle , a man is about to give Joseph a congratulatory slap on the back. The interior of the temple is much calmer where the wedding is actually taking place. Joseph is holding the flowering rod which is a sign of God's blessing. The lily that blooms from the rod is often used as a symbol of Mary's purity. |
