Vermeer thoughtfully conceived this work to focus on the two figures and to reinforce the bonds that unite them. For example, the orthogonals of the perspective system reinforce the woman's central thematic importance by converging at her sunlit sleeve. Furthermore, Vermeer strengthened the psychological bonds uniting them through the measured shapes of the virginal, mirror, and black-framed painting, which establish a complex visual framework for their relationship.
