Although this painting is in poor condition and has been over painted in certain areas (the bird cage, for example, is not original), the still life has been well preserved. Here, Vermeer suggests that an interruption has occurred through the turn of the young woman's head, a compositional device that gives the scene an unusual sense of expectancy.
