Jacques Lipchitz and His Wife 1916 Art Institute of Chicago oil on canvas |
This is one of the first unmistakable "Modiglianis". Lipchitz, Jacob, Cocteau, and Soutine are the names that link him to the Paris avant-garde. It ensured him his singular position in artistic Modernism, as it existed in Paris, and played a key role in the Modigliani legend. A new style has emerged and can be seen in the painting. Despite the softness of the curve that follows the silhoutte of the figures, there is a boldness to it, a unique curvature of line and form. |
