Leopold Survage 1917 Art of the Ateneum, Helsinki oil on canvas |
Leopold Survage, a painter and set designer with Cubist inclinations, shared both a studio with Modigliani and his alcoholic excesses. Survage was unhappy with this portrait because of the way the eyes were painted. Modigliani explained the one normal eye look with this statement; "With one eye you are looking at the outside world, while with the other you looking within yourself. |
