The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh
1889
oil on canvas 73x92cm
MOMA

The most exalted works of art since the end of the eighteenth century seemed to have sneaked up on mankind. These artists were usually spurned as anti-social misfits or riff-raff. The most misunderstood artist seems to be the painter- van Gogh. It's as if van Gogh tried to include the story of Genesis and the birth of Christian church in this painting. Here we have serenity and chaos, and peace and cosmic disturbance all at once. Van Gogh is probably the most enthralling modern painter of all time. His works combine a tangible amount of realism with just the correct measure of disturbing reality, so that he has become the symbol of universal expressionism.
