Tommaso Portinari commissioned this triptych from Hugo van der Goes and it originally hung on the high altar at the Portinari family chapel. It consists of three panels. The most striking feature of this work is the depiction of space. It is both infinite and intimate- a quality that only Hugo, of all the Nothern Renaissance artists, managed to achieve. Everything about this painting is spectacular. Just look at the angels and see how their different color wings make a stunning contrast. This is Hugo's finest achievement.
