Persistence of Memory
Salvador Dali
1931
oil on canvas 24x33cm
MOMA Museum

Dali is perhaps the greatest wastrel of the fine arts- he threw his talent down the drain for publicity and prostituted himself to the world of advertising and Hollywood. Yet before he was swept away by his own hype he created some of the greatest images of the twentieth century. This one is known for it's three "limp" watch faces, which appear to be melting, and a smaller timepiece covered with ants, set in a barren landscape.
