Often it is difficult to determine who was a pupil and who was a follower of Rembrandt. During the nineteenth century, schloars mistakenly gave an increasing number of seventeenth century Dutch masters the label 'pupil of Rembrandt'. They were given this label because they applied Rembrandt's dramatic chiaroscuro effect to their paintings. Nevertheless, the number of documented pupils remains large. Rembrandt was not only a highly productive artist, but also a very effective teacher. The following pupils were included because they left an oeuvre of quality and importance.
