This painting was given to Charles Ephrussi as a gift after he bought Bunch of Asparagus from Manet for more than Manet was asking. Manet sent Eph russi the painting with a note stating: "There was one missing from your bunch." Georges Bataille remarked, "The solitary asparagus of Manet is not a still life like others: although still, it is, at the same time, lively." |
