The Spanish Singer is Manet's first Salon success. Here is a Parisian clearly play acting as a Spaniard. His clothes are from different regions of Spain, and the guitar is for a left handed player but is held right handed by the model rendering it unplayable.
However the critics were warm in their reception of the painting. On his return from Spain Gautier wrote:
Caramba! There's a Guitarero who doesn't come from the Opera Comique...There is a great deal of talent in this life-size figure, painted with a full brush in courageous strokes and really true color. Manet received the mention honorable from the Salon for this work.
