This is Manet's only known copy after Rembrandt and there are no known opinions of the great Dutch master by Manet. This small copy is not only schematically free, but considerably reduces the original by cutting off some of the lower part. It could be that the copy was made from a etching or a photograph. Manet gave this copy to Dr. Siredey, who treated him during the last years of his illness.
