Modigliani visited the Cezanne memorial exhibit in 1907 and became instantly influenced by what he saw. Nowhere is Cezanne's influence revealed more than in this painting. Modigliani overtly incorporated Cezanne's bold use of separation, of perspective and shape, of color into his own palette and style. Modiglinai's own daughter called it a "watered-down Cezanneque structure." Even though Modigliani darkened the background and softened the facial features of the beggar, Cezanne's influence could still be discerned.
