When Mary was three, she was brought to the temple to live. To the amazement of all she climbed the fifteen steps up to the temple. Mary is poised between the protective arms of her mother and the high priest. The haloed figure at the left is almost certainly Joseph, Mary's future husband. Giotto who often modifies the details of a story, depicts only ten steps. This shows that Giotto is more intent to show another aspect of the story- the emotions of Anna and the trepidation of Mary at this separation. |
