Cezanne signed each panel 'Ingres' in the lower right and entered the date 1811. This date corresponds to the inscription on 'Jupiter and Thetis', the painting by Ingres in the Musee Granet in Aix-en-Provence, which reads "Ingres, Rome, 1811." Behind the seated figure of Hiver, traces of the first version showing a standing woman can be seen clearly. These four panels were part of the decor of the Jas de Bouffan, the manor house that Cezanne's father had acquired in 1859. At the time of the purchase, the big house was apparently in a rather bad state, which may explain why the banker, although opposed to the artistic career of his son, permitted him to decorate the walls of the salon on the ground floor with numerous mural paintings. By signing these works with the name of Ingres, Cezanne may have wanted to advise his father, in a mocking way, that he was not inferoir to even the most famous artist of the age.
