By virtue of its calm, its balance, and its power and sobriety of color, this landscape seem related to the still lifes that Cezanne executed at about the same period. Kenneth Clark has said of this painting: "It has a stunning boldness and largeness of vision. It also foreshadows one of the chief characteristics which separate Cezanne from the Impressionists-the frontalityof his attack. The powerful horizontals which run parallel to the picture plane, and support the simplified mass, produce an immediate assault on the eye, differing both from the carefully contrived 'leads in' of the Baroque landscape and the balanced design of classical."
