As one of his biographers pointed out, Modigliani's entire career
was really a lifelong inquiry into the human figure. With the
exception of four landscapes painted early in his career during
a trip to the South of France -by the artist's own admission,
"the work of a novice"- the human likeness is the only motif that
really commanded his attention.
