Not long after this work was completed American dealer Julien Levy bought this painting. Levy found the painting unusual - but not to the publis taste, and therefore unsaleable. It turned out he was wrong because the painting changed hands numerous times before ending up in the MOMA's collection. "Just as I am astonished that a bank clerk never eats a cheque, so too am I astonished that no painter before me ever thought of painting a soft watch." - Dalí |
