Until the 17th century most artists who used oils under painted their surfaces first, to achieve a consistent surface. Hals was one of the pioneers of the alla prima(Italian for 'at first') technique in which the paint is applied directly to the ground without under painting. The effect of this technique is clearly visible in the broad brush strokes and spontaneous textural qualities of much of Hals's work. |
