Vermeer turned his attention to depictions of the social interaction of upper-class men and women. He set this couple within an expansive interior, using perspective to define the spatial arrangement. Less evident, however, is the nature of the couple's relationship. Despite the presence of wine and music, the mood seems somber and the emotional bond distant.
