The pose and composition of this print are derived from a portrait painted by Titian. Rembrandt posed himself at an olbique angle, behind a stone wall with his head turned towards us. One year later Rembrandt adopted the same pose for a painted self portrait. In the first printed catalog of Rembrandt's etchings in 1751, Gersaint looked on this print as the finest of all his etched self portraits.
