Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam from Leiden in 1631 and in that year he produced this stunning self portrait. He spent considerable time on this print running it through eleven states. The first four only showed his head. In each successive state Rembrandt added or changed little parts of the print. Perhaps he took into account that collectors might be interested in different states of the print.
