MANET family
Manet's father Auguste (1797-1862) held important posts in the legal administration, becoming a chevalier of the Legion of Honour and a judge. He married Eugenie Desiree Fournier who gave him three sons, Edouard (1832-83), Eugene (1833-92) and Gustave (1835-84). Auguste Manet became partially paralysed in 1858, two years before Manet painted his parents. Eugene studied medicine, followed no profession and married Berthe Morisot in 1874. Gustave was a lawyer and a Republican politician and friend of Clemenceau, becoming a municipal councillor in 1871. Auguste Manet's elder sister Emilie was the mother ofJules De Jouy (1812-94).
