GONZALES, Eva
1849-1883
The daughter of Emmanuel Gonzales (novelist, playwright and journalist), Eva studied with Charles Chaplin, becoming Manet's pupil in 1869 and a long suffering model for her portrait. Although influenced by Manet's style, her early works were cautious enough to gain entrance to the Salon. She later acquired her own freer, more personal style with a penchant for social realism. An excellent artist and Berthe Morisot's rival for Manet's approval, she married Henri Guerard in 1879 and died a few days after Manet in 1883 from an embolism resulting from childbirth.
