FOURNIER family

Manet's father married Eugenie Fournier (1811-85) a god-daughter of the elected king of Sweden who, as Marshal Bernadotte, had been a close friend of her father. Her brother Edmond (1800-1865), who encouraged Manet's artistic talents as a boy, was a military man and a monarchist who retired to Pontoelles after the Revolution of 1848. Edmond Fournier married a Metman and was thus related to Ambroise Adam. One of his sons, also called Edmond and born the same year as Manet, is referred to in Manet's letters from Rio. In 1865 the artist stayed with Fournier relatives on his return from Spain.
