DESBOUTIN, Marcellin
1823-1902

Writer, artist and brilliant print maker, Desboutin lived in style near Florence until ruined (he claimed to have gambled away a castle in Italy), then as a penniless but aristocratic bohemian in Paris from 1871. He frequented the cafe' Guerbois where he was one of it's liveliest members and then led the move to the Nouvelle-Athenes. He exhibited with the Impressionists in 1876. He was happier as a etcher and his portraits of Manet, Degas, and Duranty in this medium are convincing in presentation and technique.
