DEGAS,Edgar
1834-1917
Rivals as well as friends and colleagues, Degas and Manet disputed each other's claim to precedence as painters of modern life. Although the Old Masters influenced Degas well into the 1860's, he later devoted himself to urban themes, including some not treated by Manet, the ballet and the brothel.
He me Manet in 1862 in the Louvre while Manet was making an etching of a Velazquez. Degas concern with different media and his constant technical explorations led him into a wide variety of works. He was a dedicated photographer, print-maker, and sculpture. His painting was no less diverse
as he explored the use of watercolors, oil, and pastels.
