CALLIAS, Nina de

Poet and pianist, renowned for her striking looks, extravagant ideas and generosity, Nina's bohemian salon attracted the liveliest talents in the 1870s, including Mallarme and Manet whose portrait of Nina was reproduced to illustrate a poem by her friend Charles Cros. Famous for the vigour of her sexual life her fondness for alcohol and her alternating moods of hilarity and depression, her came to an early end.
