ASTRUC, Zacharie
1835-1907

Artist, writer and composer, hispanophile and japonist, Astruc wrote in support of Manet's paintings at the Salon des Refuses and collaborated on an illustrated songsheet in 1863, composed a poem for Olympia and advised Manet on his visit to Spain in 1865. In 1865 he hailed the genius of Monet and was responsible for intrducing him to Manet. He also wrote the introduction to the catalogue of Manet's one man show at the Exposition Universelle in 1867. Fantin showed Manet painting Astruc's portrait, as he had in fact done in 1866, in A Studio in the Batignolles of 1870. Astruc himselfexecuted a bust of Manet and by the 1880's was receiving recognition as a sculptor.
