LETTER TO EMILE ZOLA
My dear Zola, what a famous New Year's present you've given me in your remarkable article, which is very gratifying. It comes in good time, for I've been found unworthy of the privilege, enjoyed by so many others, of submitting by list. And so, since I look for no good from our judges, I shall take care to send them no paintings of mine. They would need only to play me the trick of accepting just one or two, and the rest, as far as the public is concerned, I might as well throw to the dogs.
I am making up my mind to hold a private show. I have at least twoscore pictures to exhibit. I've already been offered a site in a very good location near the Champ de Mars. I'm going to stake the lot, and seconded by men like yourself, am hopeful of success. See you soon.
Cordially, yours ever,
All of us here are delighted with the article, and I am instructed to send you thanks.
