The Critics

This cartoon appeared in a newsletter. It mocks Manet's 'Olympia' for having a gorilla like ugliness.
This caricature by Cham was accompanied by this warning:

"Do close that window! What I'm telling you, M. Manet, it is for your own good."
This journal shows 'Le Bon Bock's' popularity and includes Manet's controversial Legion of Honor medal awarded to him in 1881.
Manet was seen as the king of the Impressionists. This is not true becuase Manet stood alone.
Manet was accused of incompetence for painting 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergere'. Critics were astonished by his obvious "mistake": the customer was missing from the painting. This caricature fixed the missing figure.
