It is relatively rare to find Manet giving a specific setting to one of his pastel portraits. The majority of his sitters are shown against a neutral background. There has been much argument about the location of the bench. Some have argued that the setting is in the studio of Otto Rosen, which Manet occupied from July 1878 to April 1879.
There can surely be no doubt that the sitter is Jeanne Demarsy. The critics saw her as the quint essential Parisienne. |
