Portrait of Eva Gonzales

This still life led the powerful Albert Wolf to damn the portraitist in a style that was supposed to be Parisian and witty:

"As long as Mr. Manet paints lemons and oranges, as long as he composes still lifes, it is possible to acknowledge extenuating circumstances. But when he is so bold as to turn a human being into such a monster, when he turns a young and perhaps pretty woman into an abominable and flat caricature in oil paint, he must allow me to shrug my shoulders and walk past to contemplate paintings that are more deserving of my attention."

The lesson is clear: Manet may be talented, but he should devote himself to the correct representation of inanimate objects; if not, he debases all that he touches.
