Manet painted this portrait of the brilliant tragedian Philibert Rouviere in the role of Hamlet, soon after his return from Spain. This is one the the first paintings in which Manet's new discoveries were put into action and we can see the references made to Velazquez. Manet wrote of Velazquez's painting, 'Pablillos de Valladolid'; "It is perhaps the most astonishing piece of painting ever done." |
