The Old Musician

The absinthe drinker appears once again in this later painting as a displaced character. The others are a wandering Jew, a gypsy, and children of the slums- all inhabitants of the no man's land around Paris known as the 'Zone.' This painting corresponds to Baudelaire's concept of "the heroism of modern life", where there would always be victims of change.
