Manet struggled with this painting and was nervous about the response it would get from the Salon. Manet would laugh, then worry, assuring everyone that this picture was bad, and in the same breath he would add that it would be a great success. The painter Caillebotte bought this painting and as part of his legacy left it to the Musee d'Orsay. One critic wrote; "Do close that window! What I'm telling you, M. Manet, is for your own good." |
