This painting follows two events in Matisse's work; the execution of The Dance for Albert Barnes and the illustration of Mallarme's poems. With those two works Matisse created new mythical figures in unprecedented plastic spaces: mural painting and book. Pink Nude belongs to the universe of new forms and ambivalent figures which is contemporary to Surrealism and abstract art.
