Representation of the human figure in the work of Matisse reaches its highest degree of abstraction in the gouches done between 1952 and 1954. The series of the four Blue Nudes is the end of a long march towards abstraction which Matisse had undertaken in his drawings as well as his paintings. Just as Delacroix ended the movement of the line of an arm with a claw and not a hand, Matisse treats the lines of the limbs of a body like signs prolonging their curves, like arrows.
